Description

Flats 1 and 2, located at Nos. 23 and 25 High Street, Maldon, are shops and flats with an early 19th-century front that conceals an earlier building. The front range is timber-framed and rendered, featuring a plain tile gambrel roof that is partly hidden behind a parapet and upper storey. The rear range, known as No. 3 Coach Lane, has a gabled plain tile roof with the upper floor rendered over two storeys of painted weatherboarding.

The exterior consists of three storeys with cellars that are now filled, and it has a three-window range. The front, facing the Church of All Saints, displays two slightly projecting bows on the upper two storeys, each adorned with tripartite sash windows that include central vertical glazing bars. In the centre of each storey, there is a sash window with margin glazing and arched vertical bars. The three first-floor windows are topped with stucco hoods supported on consoles. The ground floor shop front features a fascia with a cornice over most of the frontage, which is supported by panelled pilasters. Under the bowed sections, the shop front extends forward as canted bays with four-light windows on the front faces. The northern side of the building is made of painted brick, and there are chimney stacks at each end of the ridge.

The rear block, No. 3 Coach Lane, is also three storeys high and has a small-paned tripartite sash window on the first and second floors, with the upper window featuring 20th-century metal inserts. The ground floor includes a single door and a door with a window beneath a timber gable. The interior has not been inspected.
