Description
No. 21 High Street is a shop with offices, built in the early 19th century. It features a timber frame with a stucco finish and a hipped slate roof that is hidden behind a parapet. The building stands three storeys tall and has a two-by-two window arrangement. The exterior includes a painted and moulded cornice and a recessed curved corner on the southeast side.
On the second floor, there are two margin-glazed sash windows with moulded surrounds. The first floor also has two similar windows, but these are topped with projecting moulded hoods supported by consoles. The ground floor has a jetty-like overhang with a curved soffit, and it features a 20th-century shop front with tripartite subdivided glazing, pilasters, consoles, a timber stall-riser, and a free-standing fascia. There are also two entrance doors with fanlights, framing a 20th-century window with two panes.
The building's frontage facing the Church of All Saints has pairs of similar sash windows on each floor and a 19th-century shop front with a fascia between large decorative consoles. The central entrance is recessed and features a margin-glazed door with a fanlight, flanked by elliptical-headed windows. A bressumer above is supported by cast-iron columns.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this site is significant as it represents the location of the former Moot Hill, and the jetty is likely a reminder of this history. A fragment of an arched brace in the cellar appears to be the only surviving structural remnant.
