Description
This is a table tomb located approximately 7 metres northeast of the northeast corner of the north vestry of the Church of St. Margaret, dating from around 1683. It is made of stone and features a moulded base and top slabs. The tomb has two side panels on the north and south faces, with a central pilaster that is moulded, and end pilasters that are carved with skulls, hourglasses, picks, and shovels. There is a coat of arms on the west end. The long inscription begins with, "These verses were found, made written and ordered by Doctor Peter Chamberlen here entered for his epitaph," and it discusses family matters and the reigns of monarchs during Dr. Chamberlen's life, from May 8, 1601, to December 22, 1683. Dr. Chamberlen lived at Woodham Mortimer Hall and inherited his family's secret of short midwifery forceps. In 1818, several midwifery instruments were discovered in an old chest at the Hall.
