Description

White Lyons is a house that was formerly two dwellings, dating from the late 15th century with an early 19th-century facade. It features a timber frame with brick facades on the front and rear walls, and plastered returns. The roof is covered with red plain tiles. There are external left and 18th-century rear left red brick chimney stacks, along with a 16th-century truncated stack to the right. The building has stone coping and a band at the parapet, as well as a central band.

It stands two storeys high with attics, displaying a six-window range on the first floor, of which the second and fifth windows are blocked. All windows have gauged brick arches, while the ground floor has a four-window range, including a 19th-century shop window with glazing bars, a moulded surround, and a flat canopy on moulded brackets. The other ground floor windows are small paned vertically sliding sashes. There are reveal panels to two round-headed recessed porches, each featuring six-panelled doors with traceried lights above.

The original heavy oak frame of the building was jettied to the east (front) and in the three smaller rear bays. The original front and rear walls were removed when the brick facade was constructed. The floor joists in the south bay have soffit shoulders with low centre tenons, while the north bay has similar joists but with a top spur. Inside, there is a stone fire surround with a three-centre arched head. The roof is of high quality, featuring a double framed side purlin construction with applied down bracing, and a halved and bridled scarf joint at the top plate.
