Description
New Hall is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with later alterations and additions. It features a timber frame and is faced with 18th-century red brick, with a weatherboarded left return. The roof is covered in red plain tiles and is hipped on the right crosswing, which has two red brick chimney stacks, with a central stack on the left main range. The building is two storeys high with attics, and the main range has three segmental-headed dormers. There is a coping and band at the parapet, and the windows are arranged in a 3:1 pattern, consisting of small-paned vertically sliding sashes, mostly tripartite, with one range on the left return of the crosswing. The windows have reveal panels, a moulded surround, a frieze, and a moulded pediment, and there is a six-panelled door to the right of the main range. A Sun Insurance plaque is located on the first floor, and there is a rear wing to the right.
Inside, the original build of the house and crosswing features a heavy close-set timber frame, stop-chamfered bridging joists, and a segmental arched door head on the ground floor of the crosswing, which also retains a fragment of a simple two-armed crown post roof. The main range has a side purlin roof that is pegged at the apex and reuses some sooted timbers. There is a large back-to-back inglenook fireplace with a flat mantel beam and a cast iron fireback, possibly from another location. The interior also includes a newel staircase and 18th-century features such as panelled doors with moulded surrounds and segmental arches on the ground and first floors. Some doors have L hinges, and one small door features cockshead hinges. Historical records indicate that John Broke of New Hall was presented for not attending church in 1566.
