Description
38 Market Street is a building originally part of The Crown Public House, which has changed ownership earlier this century but is now part of The Crown Public House once more. It dates back to the 15th century, with modifications made in the 18th century and a refronting in the late 19th century. The building is timber-framed and was originally jetted. The exterior is now plastered, featuring a single-pitched slate roof at the front with a brick chimney stack, while the rear wing has a gambrel roof covered with peg tiles. The structure has three storeys and one window. The second floor has a 20th-century casement window, the first floor has a 20th-century 12-pane sash window, and the ground floor features a 20th-century tripartite sash window. The rear elevation is weatherboarded and includes a flat-topped dormer. Inside, the building has an exposed frame with square-section floor joists on the ground floor and jowled posts on the first floor. Notably, the ground floor contains two very rare wall panels painted around 1700, depicting red and yellow flowers. These paintings imitate Chinese-inspired wallpapers to circumvent the wallpaper tax that was in effect from 1712 to 1836 and to avoid the high cost of actual wallpaper.
