Description
The Church of St John the Baptist in Buckhurst Hill is a parish church built in the 19th century. It features stone construction that is partly coursed and partly random, topped with slate roofs. The nave was consecrated in 1837, followed by the northern aisle, northern chapel, and chancel in 1865, the southern aisle in 1870, an extension and southwest spire in 1879, and the western front in 1892.
The chancel includes an east window with five trefoiled lights and tracery beneath a four-centred arch, as well as north and south windows with two trefoiled lights and segmental-pointed arches. To the west of these on the north side, there is an arcade featuring two two-centred arches supported by brown marble shafts with capitals decorated with naturalistic foliage, leading into the northern chapel. On the south side, there is a single two-centred arch with engaged shafts and naturalistic floriate capitals leading into the organ chamber. The chancel arch is also two-centred and moulded. A richly carved timber screen has been relocated from its original position in the chancel arch further east into the chancel.
The chancel roof consists of three bays with arch-braced collars. The nave has two arcades of five bays, featuring two-centred arches and capitals with various naturalistic foliate designs, with the exception of the two westernmost capitals of the northern arcade, which are moulded. The northern aisle is low with a lean-to roof, while the southern aisle is higher with a pitched roof. The western window has five trefoiled lights and a two-centred arch. The nave's roof is constructed with hammerbeams and arched braces that have a four-centred curvature. The stained glass throughout the church varies in style and date, with one window in the northern aisle displaying Pre-Raphaelite characteristics.
