Description
This is a coal duty boundary marker located approximately 400 meters east of the Wake Arms Roundabout on the B172, dated 1861 and cast by Henry Grissell. The marker is made of white painted cast iron and has a square column with chamfered corners, topped with a pyramidal shape. Below the pyramidal top, the necking features a shield divided into quarters by a red raised cross, which includes a red dagger in the top left quarter, representing the City of London crest. The column has a raised inscription that reads ‘24 VICT’, referring to the 1861 London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act. The base of the marker is hidden beneath earth.
