Description
Old House is a Grade II* listed house, originally built as a hunting lodge in 1542. The structure features a timber frame that is exposed externally, with plastering and weatherboarded gables, topped by a red plain tile roof. It is two storeys high and has a mix of 19th and 20th-century casement windows. The central entrance has a semi-circular head, and there are lean-to extensions at both ends of the building. A notable feature is the late 16th-century central chimney stack made of red brick with a concertina shaft. Inside, the frame includes recurved wind bracing, flat studs, and a cambered "deck" on the first floor. The service rooms are located at the north end, while the south end was refloored with haunched tenons when it was converted into a residence in the late 16th century. The house offers wide views, making it ideal for observing the hunt. Historical documents from 1542 detail the costs associated with its construction as part of the emparkment.
