Description

Fairlands is a house dating from the late 15th century, with significant alterations in the late 16th century. It is located in Abbess, Berners and Beauchamp Roding, with an attached garden wall and pump. The house has a distinctive ā€˜L’ shaped plan, featuring a clay peg tile hipped and gabled roof, with later slate-roofed lean-to extensions connecting the two wings. The front elevation is faced in painted brickwork with a parapet, concealing remnants of the original timber-framed structure. A central doorcase is surrounded by rusticated brickwork, flanked by tripartite sash windows with 6/6 glazing bars under segmental arched heads on both floors. Smaller sash windows are present above the doorcase, and other windows are a mix of wooden casements and old iron casements with small panes. A large brick stack is located at the rear of the southern wing, constructed with diagonally placed red bricks in a cruciform design.

The southern block comprises three bays of substantial timber framing, notable for its elaborately carved and chamfered floor joists and a 4-centred arched tie beam in the first-floor chamber. This section was originally jettied on the south side, and features late 16th-century arched brick fireplaces on both floors, along with a fragment of 17th-century wall painting. The western wing consists of four bays of late 16th century timber framing with a contemporary stack at the north end. The property includes an early brick-lined cellar and an elegant 19th-century staircase. A red brick garden wall encloses the south and west sides of the property, along with a cast iron yard pump and the remains of a moat.
