Description
This is a late 18th-century house, "Blackstock," built onto a 16th-century "Tudor Cottage," which may have a 14th-century core. "Blackstock" is constructed of gault brick with a grey slate roof, hipped to the left and with a hipped forward crosswing to the right. It features a 2:2 window arrangement of 19th-century vertical sliding sash windows. A central, two-panel, two-light door is set within a gault brick porch with a Moorish arch opening, and a hipped grey slate roof lean-to extension features a 20th-century three-light window to the left. "Tudor Cottage," located at the rear, is timber framed with areas of weatherboarding and exposed framework. It has three forward gables to the right and a 20th-century lean-to porch with a glazed door to the central and right crosswing. Three 19th-century two-light casements are visible on the first floor, and a matching window forms a red-tiled ground floor oriel to the left. An off-centre concertina shaft red brick chimney rises, and a red brick chimney is present on the right. A gault brick chimney stack is part of "Blackstock." Internally, an original chimney piece with a straight mantel beam remains. Heavy halved braced timbers and some through braces are also visible. A plaque, donated by the Agricultural and Allied Workers on September 19, 1976, bears the inscription: "On their return from transportation The Tolpuddle Martyrs, George Loveless, James Loveless and James Brine lived here from 1838 to 1844.”
