Description
The Old Mill House is a house from the 18th century, associated with Passingford Mill located about 200 meters to the southeast. It has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. It is aligned approximately north-south with an eastern aspect, featuring a chimney stack on the south wall and an internal chimney stack at the north end. There is a 19th-century chimney stack at the northwest corner.
The house has a single-storey extension to the north, which is roofed with red clay Roman tiles, and a small single-storey extension at the southwest corner, both dating from the 19th century. The structure has two storeys.
On the eastern elevation, there is a central glazed door from the 20th century with a simple doorcase and a moulded and bracketed hood from the 18th century. There is one 20th-century double-hung sash window in its original opening, which has a segmental brick arch, and one 20th-century casement window in a widened opening. On the first floor, there are two double-hung sash windows—one from the early 19th century and one from the 20th century—along with a 20th-century bow window in its original opening. A dentilled course runs below the eaves.
The roof consists of three parallel ranges aligned east-west, presenting three hipped ends. A schedule from 1952 noted diagonal shafts on the north chimney stack, which are no longer present. On the south gable end, there is a wooden sundial, although one plank is missing, with the remains of a painted inscription that reads 'AD 1635 Horas non numero nisi serenas'.
