Description
The Post Office at Passingford Bridge is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th or 18th century, with 19th century and later additions and alterations. A post office was operated by a receiver at this location in 1739, and by 1813 it was part of the daily route between Epping and Ongar. The building is timber framed and weather-boarded, topped with a grey slate roof. It has one storey and attics.
The structure includes a house with a crosswing on the left side, which features a red brick outshot and a red brick chimney. There is a boarded door on the ground floor and a boarded loft door. The main range has two gabled dormers and a 19th century three-light small paned casement window to the left. A gabled wing extends forward from the central dormers, with an outshot to the left rear and a trellised walkway on the right. There are two doors: one boarded door leading to the gabled building and one half-glazed door to the main range. The front of the central range is plastered and has a 19th century small paned casement window in the attic, along with double boarded doors that have protective bars. The main range is topped with two Gault brick chimney stacks.
