Description

Walnut Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with extensions added in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of three bays aligned east to west, featuring an external chimney on the west gable and an internal chimney in the eastern bay, located north of the ridge. The 20th-century extensions are to the north and northeast.

The cottage is a single storey with attics. The south elevation, which faces Back Lane, has two 20th-century casement windows and a glazed side door, along with three gabled dormers that also contain 20th-century casement windows. The exterior is decorated with pargetting featuring zig-zag lines and concentric circles arranged in panels.

Inside, the original floors remain in the western and middle bays, with axial beams that are chamfered. The common joists are unchamfered, with lamb's tongue stops present only in the western bay. The framing is exposed in the upper rooms of the western and middle bays, with posts that lack jowls but have well-cut lap-dovetail tying joints and primary straight bracing. The tiebeam between the middle and eastern bays is intact, while the tiebeam between the middle and western bays has been severed to create an inserted doorway, which is strongly framed around the door. A chisel-cut date of 1711 on the lintel likely indicates when this doorway was added.
