Description
129 Sheering Mill Lane is a Grade II listed building, originally built as a National School in 1851 and enlarged in 1870. This 1 and a half storey Gothic structure is constructed of white gault brick and features a slate roof. It is positioned at a right angle to the road, with a symmetrical front facing east and a single storey rear wing extension.
The building has wide overhanging eaves supported by trefoil pierced wooden brackets. The east front includes a central wooden door with two vertical panels and a heavy frame, which is sheltered by a gabled slated hood resting on double scrolled wooden brackets. The ground floor windows are square-headed and set beneath brick hood moulds, featuring two-light cast iron mullioned and transomed frames with cast iron diamond-paned lattices. There are two windows in the gable facing the road, with the upper floor windows similar in style but without transoms. The building also has two symmetrical lateral chimneys at the rear and one window in the rear wing. This picturesque and well-preserved small early school building exemplifies 19th century Gothic architecture.
