Description
Albion House is a lobby-entrance house dating from the early 17th century, with later extensions in the 20th century. The building is timber-framed, with plaster infill and a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. It comprises four bays arranged approximately northwest to southeast, featuring an axial chimney stack, now blocked, in the third bay from the northwest, defining the lobby-entrance. An original rear wing extends from the northwest end, creating an L-shaped plan, with a chimney stack marking the junction. A two-storey extension sits in the eastern angle, and a single-storey extension is present at the northwest end, all dating from the 20th century. The house has two storeys and a four-window front with 19th or 20th century double-hung sash windows, each with four lights. A door is located in the northwest extension. The roof is hipped. Internal timber framing is exposed. The interior features arch-braced studding, rather than trenched, and primary straight bracing in a partition wall. Chamfered beams with lamb’s tongue stops are present on both the ground floor and the first floor. An original newel staircase leads from the first floor to the attics, except for the two lowest steps. The roof structure is not visible.
