Description

This is a late 17th and early 18th century cottage, extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed with plaster walls and a thatched roof. Originally two bays aligned roughly northeast-southwest, it features a chimney stack at the northeast end. In the early 19th century, it was extended to the northeast to create two cottages, which were later combined. There are external chimney stacks at each end, dating to the 19th century. Single-storey lean-to extensions were added in the 19th century, using handmade red clay plain tiles on the southwest side and 19th-century red clay pantiles on the northeast side. A wash-house extension, with an end chimney stack and a 20th-century corrugated tile roof, sits on the northwest elevation. Further lean-to and flat-roofed extensions were added in the 20th century. The cottage is single-storey with attics. The southeast elevation has a tiled lean-to porch and eight 20th-century casement windows. Four more windows are set within swept, rectangular dormers. Some of the timber framing is exposed on the interior. In the southwest cottage, a central tiebeam with straight braces, fully jointed and pegged, is present, along with a later inserted floor featuring a chamfered axial beam. The northeast cottage retains an original floor with an unchamfered axial beam. A 19th-century cast iron grate is located in the upper room of the northeast cottage.
