Description

Shanks Farmhouse is a lobby-entrance house dating from the 17th century. It is timber framed and has been clad in weatherboarding, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The house originally comprised three bays aligned roughly northwest-southeast, featuring an axial chimney stack in the central bay, creating a lobby-entrance layout. A rear wing extends from the southeastern bay, forming an L-shaped plan. The main house is two storeys high, while the rear wing is single-storey with an attic. A 20th-century tiled gabled porch shelters the front door. The front façade has two windows, which are 20th-century casements. The chimney stack is characterised by grouped diagonal shafts and provides a symmetrical appearance to the front elevation. A rear wing extends from the SE bay, forming an L plan. The property was formerly within the parish of Harlow and is documented in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments' records (RCHM) reference 20.
