Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating from the 14th century, with alterations and extensions made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of flint rubble, with some freestone and clunch dressings, and features a red plain tile roof. The building has a simple rectangular plan, comprising a combined chancel and nave.
The 14th-century chancel and nave include a north wall that has one 14th-century window with a trefoiled light, along with a 19th-century window and door leading to the vestry. The south wall contains one 19th-century window and one 14th-century window with a trefoiled head, moulded jambs, a segmental pointed rear arch, and a label with head stops. There is also a 19th-century south door. The west wall was rebuilt in 1872, and an east apse was added in the same year, designed in a southern Romanesque derived style with arcading.
Inside, there is a 14th-century roof with tie beams and a late 12th-century font featuring a square bowl with sloping sides, decorated with carvings of foliage, fleur-de-lys, crescent, disc, star, and whorl, set on a modern base. Additionally, a 14th-century piscina has been re-set in the north wall of the apse, featuring moulded jambs and a trefoiled head.
