Description

Moulsham's Farmhouse is a 14th-century hall house that was extended in the early 16th century and altered in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a red plain tile roof, and stands two storeys high. The west side features some exposed timber framing, while a modern lean-to extension is located at the rear. The building has a window range of 1:1:4, which includes both part modern casements and original early 16th-century windows, characterized by a square bay with a moulded transom, mullions, and side lights. The 16th-century extension displays a long wall jetty supported by shaped brackets and has a central red brick chimney from the same period. A 20th-century gable with a lean-to is present at the north end.

Inside, much of the timber frame is exposed. The remains of a service wing suggest the presence of three doors, one of which features an original ogee arch. There is a centre passage crosswing and part of a 14th-century screen, with post and plank remains. The 16th-century elements include stop-chamfered beams and jowled storey posts, while the lower part of the central chimney was rebuilt around 1600. The interior also contains some 16th-century doors and windows, a late 17th-century cupboard with a semi-circular head, H hinges, and raised and fielded panels, as well as an early 18th-century fire surround with original low-level side cupboards. Additionally, there are remnants of 16th-century paving, an early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, fluted newels, and a moulded handrail, and a mid-18th-century cupboard front.
