Description

Cants Garden Centre is a 14th-century hall house with crosswings located on the north side of London Road in Stanway. The building features a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a red plain tile roof. It stands two storeys high, with gabled crossings at both the east and west ends. The east wing is jettied and supported by late 19th-century brackets, and there is a lean-to extension at the east end with a grey slate roof. The windows are arranged in a 2:1:1 pattern, consisting of 18th and 19th-century vertical sliding double-hung sashes with glazing bars, along with a 19th-century bay window in the east wing.

The east wing dates back to the 14th century and features a cambered tie beam, having formerly supported a crown post roof. There is a 17th-century extension at the rear, which is one storey with attics and includes an 18th-century flat-roofed dormer. The central hall, dating from the 14th or 15th century, has a large 15th-century chimney stack that was altered in the late 16th century. A 17th-century inserted floor and rebuilt roof feature side purlins and arched collars. The west wing is from the early 16th century but has been extensively altered in the late 18th and early 20th centuries. Additionally, there is an early 20th-century two-storey gabled extension on the west side made of painted brick with a grey slate roof, along with a single-storey 19th-century extension at the rear.
