Description

The Parish Church of St Albright, originally listed as the Church of St Ethelberts, is a Grade II* building located on the south side of London Road in Stanway. The church dates back to the 12th century and has undergone significant alterations by the architect George Gilbert Scott around 1880. The nave is from the early 12th century and retains part of its original roof, featuring scissor-bracing and notched lap joists. The north wall includes 12th-century windows, which are single light with Roman brick jambs and round stone heads. There is a mid-14th-century window with two cinquefoiled lights and a quatrefoil in a two-centred head, along with a 15th-century window also featuring two cinquefoiled lights in a two-centred head.

The south wall contains one 12th-century window and a 12th-century doorway with a round arch made of Roman brick. The west wall has Roman brick quoins and a much-restored 14th-century window, with a restored 12th-century window above it. The chancel was added in 1826 and restored around 1880, during which the south aisle, south chapel, and reportedly the bell-turret were also added. The south arcade, dating from around 1500, was taken from St Rumwald's Church in Colchester. The north porch is from the 15th century and features a four-braced crown post on a cambered tie-beam with hollow chamfers. Inside, there is an octagonal perpendicular font adorned with panels featuring shields and a chalice with the host surrounded by rays. The east window, designed by Kempe, was added in 1892. The church has a red plain tile roof.
