Description

Pelican Farmhouse is a hall-house dating to the 15th century, which has been significantly altered in later centuries. The original timber frame is largely concealed by an overlying layer of incised plaster, though occasional brackets are still visible. The steep, plain tiled roof has a central stack and a gable to the south end. The south-facing front features a brick chimney breast, weatherboarding, and a jettied overhang to the left, with canted bay windows beneath. A central canted bay is also present on the facade. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular three-window facade. 19th-century casements are found on the ground floor, with tripartite sash windows above. Two early 19th-century doors are present, the one to the right set within a fluted, pilastered doorcase with a panelled entablature. A rear extension exists, including a one-storey wing which may have originally been part of an oast-house. This extension is constructed of red brick and contains a very large fireplace. The interior features some early 17th-century panelling, a doorcase, and a volute bracket in the hall. A roof of considerable interest remains, with an extremely elaborate carved crown post and two king posts.
