Description

GREAT AND LITTLE CHURCH LANE 1. 5214 WIGBOROUGH Church of St Stephen TL 91 NE 17/42 7.4.65 (Great Wigborough) II* 2. C14 and C15 extensively restored after earthquake of 1884, mixed rubble and septaria with limestone dressings. C14 nave with original north doorway, moulded 2 centred arch and label with head stops, now blocked. Late C14 rood loft stair. Lower doorway with hollow chamfered jambs and 2 centred head. Upper doorway has round head. Windows in north wall extensively restored. Windows in south wall C19. Iiid C15 south doorway, with moulded 2 centred arch and label with head stop. Attached shafts with moulded capitals and bases. Chancel is late C19 west tower largely rebuilt using C15 materials. South porch rebuilt 1903. Nave roof in late C19 hammerbeam incorporating C15 moulded and carved wall plates. C15 door re-used in arch to tower stair. (RCHM 1).
