Description
The Hyde Farmhouse, located on Great and Little Church Lane in Wigborough, is an early 15th century hall house with crosswings that has been extensively altered in the 20th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a cladding of 20th century red brick. Some of the original timber framing is exposed in the gables of the crosswings. There are modern extensions at the rear and the east end of the farmhouse, and it features a red plain tile roof. The windows are modern casements, some of which include leaded lights, and there are two gabled dormers and one flat-roofed dormer.
The original hall contains a cross-quadrate crown post and a contemporary service wing dating from around 1420, which has housed soffit shoulders to the floor joists, a simple crown post roof, and halved and bridled scarfs. The west wing, built in the mid-16th century, features soffite tenons and diminished haunches to the floor joists, along with jowled storey posts, cambered tie beams, and an arch-braced side purlin roof. Additionally, there are late 17th century red brick gate piers accompanied by late 17th century wrought iron gates.
