Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II* listed building located on Dock Road in Little Thurrock. It dates back to the 12th century, with 14th century and later alterations. The structure is built of flint and mixed rubble, featuring limestone dressings, and has a tiled roof. The late 12th century nave includes two 19th century windows in the north wall that incorporate elements from the 14th century. The north doorway, also from the 19th century, has a part of a 14th century two-centred head. The south wall features a 19th century window alongside part of a 12th century window. The south doorway, dating from the 12th century, has a round arch. The 14th century chancel has a 19th century east window, with 14th century splays and a rear arch, while the north window is of similar date. The south door and window also contain 14th century remains. The chancel arch is from the 19th century, with moulded and carved 12th century abaci restored and extended in 1878, which also included the addition of the west tower, south vestry, organ chamber, and north porch. Notable internal fittings include a hexagonal pulpit inscribed "R 1700 C" and sedilia with three seats separated by shafts featuring moulded capitals and pointed arches.
