Description

Boxted Hall is a 17th century house with later additions, designed in an H-plan layout and extended to the south, now featuring two parallel hall ranges. The crosswings are aligned approximately north-south. The north elevation is roughcast and includes projecting wings on either side, with ridged and hipped roofs covered in peg tiles, along with eaves and troughing. There is a central red brick chimneystack located behind the ridge, with additional stacks flanking each wing. The central range has two windows consisting of hornless sashes in exposed boxes with glazing bars, and each wing has one matching window on the first storey. The ground storey features a glazed front door situated in the second bay from the left, with one window to the left and two tripartite sash windows to the right, all under lead-clad pediments.

The west elevation displays a row of three hornless sashes in exposed boxes on the first storey, featuring small panes. The ground storey has similar sashes, along with modern alterations and extensions to the south and south-west. The south elevation now includes two projecting one-bay extensions to the crosswings, each with hipped, peg-tiled roofs and eaves. Between the wings, there is a row of four sashes under gauged segmental heads, also with small panes and hornless design. The walls are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with ground storey windows matching those on the first floor. Matching windows are also found in the south-east wing end, while the southwest wing features modern windows.

Inside, there is an early 19th century staircase with a mahogany handrail supported by square iron balusters, featuring bracketed tread-ends. The interior also includes many wide doorcases and some egg and dart cornicing in reused positions. The roofs contain reused medieval rafters, with the oldest rafters located in the west wing.
