Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed building located on Hall Road in Mount Bures. This church dates back to the 12th century and features a Norman nave constructed from flint, brick, and tile, with Roman brick quoins. There is one Norman window in the center of the north wall, and the north doorway is surrounded by brick and tile, partly of Roman origin. The building includes tile string courses and a 14th-century west window with Roman tile dressings, positioned above a much-restored reticulated ogee window from the same period.
The church has 18th-century angle buttresses at the north-west and south-west corners, and a 15th-century south porch made of red brick and flushwork. The south door features vine reliefs and heraldry, specifically the Arms of Sackville, in the spandrels. A late 14th-century south window has an ogee scrolled hood moulding. The chancel matches the nave in construction, using coursed materials with Roman tiles for the quoins. The east window, also from the late 14th century, has three cinquefoil lights in an obtusely gabled head, with five quatrefoils above.
The transepts and tower were rebuilt in the 19th century, specifically in 1875, 1908, and 1936, using coursed rubble. The south porch roof is a single bay structure with two king posts, ashlared with four cants and a ridge piece. The south door features 15th-century casements and ogees, with double doors on each side.
