Description

Baker's Hall is a house located on Colne Road, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 18th century. The building is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. It features five bays facing east, with an axial chimney stack positioned one bay from the right end and a truncated chimney stack that was originally external but is now enclosed at the right end. There is an 18th or 19th century extension at the rear of the left end, along with flat-roofed single-storey extensions on each side of it. The house has two storeys and a four-window range of 18th century double-hung sash windows, each with 16 lights and some made of crown glass. The right ground-floor window is an early 19th century single-hung window with 15 lights. The entrance features a half-glazed door flanked by flattened columns, also from the early 19th century. The left end of the roof is hipped. Inside, the right ground-floor room has plain joists of horizontal section, joined to the bridging beam with soffit tenons that have diminished haunches, and jowls are visible in the rear wall of this bay. Other areas have chamfered or plain beams, with joists plastered to the soffits. The front wall has been raised approximately 1 metre in the 18th century, while the rear wall and tiebeams remain unaltered. The upper rooms are fully plastered. The building was formerly known as Normandies.
