Description

Nos. 20 and 22 Station Hill is a house located in Bures Hamlet that dates back to the late medieval period, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. It features four bays facing southwest, an 18th-century chimney stack at the left end, and an early 17th-century axial stack near the right end, which creates a lobby entrance. There is a short 18th-century extension on the right and a wing at the front of the left end added in 1982, along with a lean-to extension at the rear. The house is two stories tall and has a four-window range of 20th-century sashes, plus one additional sash on the first floor of the front wing. The entrance includes a door beneath a 20th-century gabled porch.

Inside, the building has jowled posts and exposed heavy studding, with cranked braces supporting two tiebeams on the left. The joists in front of the main stack are horizontally sectioned, stop-chamfered with step stops, and arranged longitudinally, while other joists have been much repaired and renewed. There is an unglazed window in the upper rear wall featuring three diamond mullions. The main hearth retains original brickwork measuring 0.33 meters on the sides, though the back has been renewed, and the mantel has also been replaced. The crownpost roof is incomplete.
