Description

Old Bourchiers Hall is a 16th-century house located on New Road, Aldham, and originally built on a returned L-plan, as shown on a 17th-century estate map. The northeast range is constructed in red brick, now painted, using a mixed English and Flemish bond. It features a tall gambrel roof, hipped at the east end and gabled at the west, with a bold modillion cornice along the eaves. A projecting string course runs at the first floor level, supporting a range of four pairs of eight-pane hornless sash windows above, and three matching windows below. A front door of around 1800 is set within a wide wooden case. The southwest ranges are of later brick in a Flemish bond pattern, and have ridged and hipped roofs covered in peg tiles. These ranges contain four sashes with margin bars, and no panes, alongside four ground-floor windows beneath brick arches.

Inside, a notable fire surround is made of wood and gesso, decorated with lion masks, egg and tongue motifs, and festoons. There is also some low panelling and a bolection chair rail. Some studded walling suggests a possible earlier entirely timber-framed building.
