Description

No 48 on St John's Road is a house built around 1850, with later extensions added in the 19th century. It is constructed of painted brick and features a hipped roof with brick dentil eaves and a front parapet that has a moulded cornice. A tall brick chimney stack with moulded yellow clay pots is located on the right side.

The house has a double depth plan, consisting of two main front rooms and a central entrance passage that leads to the staircase behind the right room, with the kitchen situated behind the left room. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with two windows. The façade includes two flat-fronted bays with rounded corners, which are integrated into the parapet and cornice. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features sashes with margin panes.

At the center of the house, there is a late 19th or early 20th century gabled wooden porch with fretted bargeboards, a moulded arch supported by engaged columns, and a panelled and glazed inner door. Above the bays, there is a recessed H-shaped panel that contains a Sun Fire Insurance plaque. At the rear, there is a two-storey brick extension with a 20th-century conservatory in the left angle.

Inside, most of the original interior joinery remains intact, including panelled doors and a balustrade at the top of the stairs with stick balusters and a column newel. The two front rooms feature marble chimneypieces, while the kitchen has a simple wooden chimneypiece with cupboards on either side, although its range has been removed.
