Description

Merrow House is a house built around 1802, with later alterations from the 19th century, including rear extensions from around 1870 and early 20th-century additions to the right. The building is constructed of red brick and features hipped roofs that are obscured by stone-coped parapets. Originally designed with a square plan, it now has extensions on the right side. The house has three storeys and three bays on each side, with chimney stacks located to the left and right of the centre.

The windows are plate glass sash in earlier openings, with ribbed brick heads on the first and second floors. There is a canted bay window on the ground floor to the right, featuring plate sash fenestration and panelled jambs. The central entrance has panelled doors beneath a transom light with reeded decoration. A Doric portico with two front columns and two rear pilasters, along with a triglyph frieze above, enhances the entrance.

On the left side, there are three sash windows on the first and second floors, and two windows on the ground floor, with doors in a panelled reveal and a similar porch. There is also a single-storey angle bay at the left corner with a panelled parapet. The right side features a one-bay, full-height extension set back, with another extension further back to the right.

Inside, early 19th-century shutters remain in the main rooms. There is a later 19th-century white marble fireplace in the ground-floor room at the rear and a black marble fireplace in the front sitting room. Some of the main rooms also have simple plaster cornices.
