Description
The Merrow War Memorial is a tall sandstone structure located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Evangelist. It features a Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar atop an octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on a square plinth, which has a rose carved in relief at the center of each side within a blind quatrefoil. The plinth is elevated on a four-stepped base, with the lower step having a slight overhang to allow for the placement of floral tributes.
The main dedicatory inscription is carved around the top step of the base and reads: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED/ BY THE PEOPLE OF MERROW/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF THE VILLAGE WHO IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR/ KING AND COUNTRY IN THE/ CAUSE OF JUSTICE AND HUMANITY." Additionally, a bronze plaque is affixed to a sloping stone support at the front of the lowest step, listing the 39 names of those who served in the First World War, with another plaque above it indicating "1939-1945/ (13 NAMES)."
