Description
The lodges and gates at Clandon Park House are early 18th century structures, built around the same time as the house itself, with the lodges designed in 1776 by Capability Brown. The lodges are made of stucco and topped with hipped slate roofs featuring deep eaves. Each lodge has a central wooden lantern that is currently blocked. They are single-storey buildings with attics, square in shape, and have rusticated angle piers on the ground floor. There is a plat band above the ground floor and arched recess panels on each side. Each lodge features one 12-pane sash window facing the street, a lunette window on the left-hand return front of the right lodge and on the right-hand return front of the left lodge, positioned above six-panel doors. Additionally, there are two three-light casements in the spandrels of the arches.
The gates, originally placed across the forecourt of the Old House, were relocated by Brown. They are made of wrought iron with gilt decoration and consist of double gates beneath a crested overthrow, flanked by open standards and pilasters adorned with Acanthus capitals. The central arched gates are decorated with floral and scroll motifs, and there is a coat of arms with a crown or coronet above.
