Description

Caxton Hall is a house built around 1670, with an early 18th-century extension and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features red brick construction and plain tile hipped roofs, with two original chimneys and an early 18th-century side stack on the wing, which has been partially rebuilt. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a double pile plan, along with an extension to the northeast. There is a band between the floors of the original building and a brick plinth. The deep modillioned eaves cornice may have been restored.

On the southeast elevation, the main entrance retains its original position and features a 19th-century six-panelled door with a rectangular fanlight set in a cambered brick arch. There is one ground floor and two first floor 19th-century twelve-paned recessed hung sash windows, which either replaced or repositioned earlier windows. Additionally, there are four 18th-century windows with 19th-century replacement twelve-paned hung sashes.

The southwest elevation has four square framed windows with semi-circular heads on the central lights, which were copied from the original design around 1980. Inside, the hall boasts a very fine close string staircase that rises in short flights to the attic floor. There is also an early 18th-century stone chimney piece with side consoles and Rococo scroll-work, a relined kitchen hearth, and evidence of corner hearths in the southwest rooms.
