Description

Firs Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse that was built in two phases and has undergone some later alterations. It is constructed of colourwashed red brick and features cogged brick eaves, a plain tile half-hipped roof, and brick ridge and end stacks. The building is a long range of two storeys with an attic. The right range is slightly set back on the entrance front but is flush to the rear, which faces the farmyard.

The front elevation has three windows at the first floor, all 6/6 sashes, along with a small single-light window in the projection of the left range. The ground floor also has three similar 6/6 sashes, two small windows on the left range, and a six-panelled door with an overlight on the right range. There is a flat-roofed dormer above. The right end of the building has two small attic windows, while the left end features a door to the left, a low 12-pane window, a three-light window above, and a two-light horizontal sliding sash in the attic. The long range at the rear includes two-light and three-light casements, a 6/6 sash, a three-light casement, and a single-light window, with a two-light gabled dormer above.

Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered bridging beams on both the ground and first floors, some with ogee stops, and visible wall plates. There is a massive stack with blocked open fireplaces, although the bressumers are still visible. The interior also features two winder stairs and a roof in the right range supported by tie beam trusses, coupled rafters, and collars, with some timbers chamfered. The attic in the left range is plastered, but timber-framed partitions are visible. This large farmhouse retains many original features of interest.
