Description
The Old Police Station is a building mainly from the early 20th century, with parts of an 18th-century block located at the south corner. It stands three storeys tall, constructed in stock brick with stone trim. The southwest corner features a semi-hexagonal tower with tall sash windows on all three storeys, topped by an open-sided hexagonal turret supported by Ionic columns and a stone cupola.
The west front and south wall are adorned with giant Ionic orders, and the ground floor has a rusticated stone facing. The centre of the west front has a bow window on the first floor, which includes Ionic detailing, and beneath it is an entrance with a curved pediment featuring an egg and dart motif. There is a relief of the county arms above the entrance. The west front has three six-paned sash windows, while the south side has two. The roof is hipped and slated, with a stone eaves cornice.
Additionally, there is a two-storeyed 16th-century house in the north bay, with a first floor that is timber framed and jettied. This late medieval house or wing has a surviving jetty underbuilt with a bay window, and it features a three-window range, with the central window having a wrought iron balcony.
