Description
Guy Harlings is a 16th-century building that was refaced in the 16th century. It features a timber frame with a later brick front topped with stone coping. The structure is two stories tall with attics and has a seven-window range of six-pane sash windows, which are set under straight brick arches and have a stone sill band at the first-floor level. The front door is particularly notable, featuring a case with Tuscan Doric columns and a broken pediment. The keystone of the round arch above the door is carved with a human face, and there is a fanlight above a six-panel fielded door. The roofs are double and parallel ridged, running north to south, and are covered with red clay tiles. Inside, the entrance hall is panelled with linenfold, and there is a frieze made up of about 50 round panels, each carved in relief, possibly depicting portraits. The hall also features a dentil cornice. The building was rebuilt by Sir J Comyns between 1697 and 1740, with the front designed by Dr J Badeley in 1785.
