Description
The barn at Great Seabrights Farm, dating from around 1520, is a Grade II* listed structure located in Great Baddow. It features a heavily framed oak construction with eight bays and a slightly later, off-central midstrey. The roofs are ridged and gabled, with eaves and fly-hips on the main range, covered in black weather-boards and peg-tiles.
The later midstrey is forelock-bolted to the posts of the fourth bay from the west wall side and is girt, with five studs per bay, where the central stud is principal. It includes curved wind-braces that are let into the inner surfaces and spiked to the returns and every alternate bay. The posts are unusually heavy and jowled, with obtusely pitched tie beam braces that have as many as eight pegs in each chase-mortise.
The roof is supported by queen-posts and two side-purlins per slope, with common-rafters that tenon into the lower side-purlin and curved wind braces in each pitch. All principal timbers are stop-chamfered. The midstrey retains large doors that have been much repaired, likely from the 18th century, and features a queen-post roof with matching wind-braces. This midstrey was added later, as the main top-plate was cut through during its construction.
