Description
Home Farm Barn is a barn dating from the mid 16th century, which was re-roofed in the mid 17th century. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, featuring a half-hipped roof, formerly plaintiled but these were missing at the time of survey. The south face has a central door with a lean-to pentice and a slate-roofed lean-to extension. On the east side of the entrance, the main roof continues down as a catslide. This five-bay barn showcases an interesting mid 16th-century timber frame with very local carpentry. It has jowled posts and framing with 'detached' arch bracing typical of this part of the county. The walling consists of principal and 'plank' studs, a technique seen in East Sussex, which may have originated from London and spread to this area of Essex. The barn was re-roofed, likely in the mid 17th century, and now features an aside purlin roof with queen posts and wind-bracing, although the bay spacing has been altered by these modifications. Notable are the 'archaic' scarf joints from the first phase, which are edge-halved with large face pegs and sallied abutments.
