Description
This building, located on the west side of the courtyard at Home Farm, is a farm structure of unknown purpose dating from the late 16th century, with some windows added in the 19th century. It is timber-framed and covered with black weatherboarding. The roof is hipped, primarily covered with plain tiles, but features pantiles on the south face. The building has double doors and three pivoting casements. Inside, there is a side purlin roof supported by raking struts, and the south wall displays external curved tension wind bracing. Although somewhat rebuilt, it retains interesting features such as arch-braced tie-beams, jowled posts, and very early examples of dragon-ties at the four corners. This structure showcases mid-Essex style carpentry, which contrasts with the southwest Essex style of the main barn.
