Description

This building is a cottage located 15 metres east of The Gables in Great Waltham. It dates from the early 19th century and was extended around 1830. The structure is timber framed and plastered, with an east outshut made of clay and flint, and roofs covered with corrugated clay tiles.

The cottage is one storey high. The original part features a plank door positioned left of centre on the west side, with a three-over-six sash window on either side. There are external gable-end stacks. The east outshut, added around 1830, has a catslide roof and includes a single-light casement window with glazing bars at both the north and south ends. To the south of the main gable, a single-storey extension from around 1820 has been added, which is lit by a top-hung late 20th-century casement window in the west wall. Additionally, a brick lean-to scullery was added to the south gable of the extension around 1830, featuring a plank door in the west wall and a two-light casement window with glazing bars on the south return, along with a brick stack.

Inside, the timber frame and roof, constructed from thin scantling, remain intact. There is a segmental brick fireplace in the north wall of the north room. The cladding of the partition wall between the north and south rooms has been removed, but the frame is still visible. The east outshut features flint nodules embedded in clay. The roof consists of common rafters, collars, and a ridge piece, with intact wall plates, including one on the west side that has a face-halved scarf joint. The first south extension can be accessed through a four-panelled door, which leads to a plain fireplace opening. The scullery contains a fire surround for a copper and fireplace, both of which are missing.
