Description

The Old Post Office is a house located on the north side of Main Road in Danbury. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the late 19th century. The building features a render over a timber frame and has a gabled old tile roof, with pantiles on the rear outshut. There are late 19th century brick stacks on the left end and at the rear.

The house has a two-unit plan, with a late 19th century brick outshut and extension at the rear, as well as a late 19th century wing added to the front. It is one storey high with an attic and has a two-window range. The entrance features a late 19th century four-panelled door, two of which are glazed, set in a trellised porch. The windows are late 19th century three-light casements, and there are gabled half-dormers with bargeboards, along with a two-light casement above the door. To the right, there is a late 19th century one-storey right-angled brick extension, and at the rear, a late 19th century two-storey extension and outshut.

Inside, there are 19th century plank doors, a cased beam to the right, and a chamfered beam with stepped run-out stops. The exposed timber framing includes jowled storey posts braced to a chamfered tie beam, although there is no access to the roof space. Notably, the right-hand room of this house served as the village post office from 1875 to 1931.
