Description

Dutch Cottage is a 17th-century cottage, dated 1621, with a later rear extension. It is an octagonal timber-framed building, now faced with painted brick. The roof is thatched and circular, rising to a circular red brick chimney stack. The cottage is one storey high with attics, featuring an eyebrow dormer window. It has small, multi-paned casement windows with later gables above and a nailed and boarded door to the rear. The date 1621 is inscribed on the Haven Road face. A buttress is located to the left. This is one of two surviving cottages built for Dutch labourers who reclaimed Canvey Island in the early to mid 17th century.
