Description

A pair of attached houses, dating from the 16th century, were later converted into cottages and were disused in January 1984. The buildings are timber-framed, with plaster infill and thatched roofs. They consist of a three-bay range aligned north-east to south-west, featuring an axial chimney stack immediately north-east of the middle bay, built in the 16th century, and extended to the north-east in the 19th century. A further three-bay range extends north-west from the north-east end, with two internal chimney stacks, creating an L-shaped plan. 19th-century extensions are present to the south-east of the first range and to the north-east of the second range. The cottages are single-storey with attics. The south-west elevation features a 18th-century six-panel door with glazed top panels, a 19th-century plain boarded door, three 20th-century casement windows, and two 20th-century gabled dormers with casement windows. The north-west end of the roof is half-hipped. One chimney stack has three round shafts, and the other has one round shaft, all dating from the 20th century. The first range exhibits jowled posts, curved braces trenched inside studding, some wattle and daub in a partition wall, two axial beams (one cased in, the other chamfered with lambs' tongue stops), and plain horizontal joists. The second range has transverse beams with lambs' tongue stops. Group value derives from the evident historic interest of these vernacular cottages.
