Description
The Old Hyde is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the 18th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered, and the roof is covered with slate and handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of three bays aligned northeast to southwest, with a southeast aspect and a central chimney stack. There are two rear wings, one original and one from the 18th century, which together form a rectangular plan. The house has two storeys with attics.
The main entrance has a central four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed, set within a simple 18th-century surround and a 20th-century tiled gabled porch. The front facade has a range of two windows, which are 20th-century double-hung sashes. The front wall was raised by approximately one metre in the 18th or early 19th century, and the front pitch of the roof was slated, while the remainder of the roof remains tiled. This alteration did not increase the living space, as the original roof structure is still intact.
Inside, the house features chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, joists that are of horizontal section, and original rebated boards on both floors. There is an inserted ceiling in the northwest wing.
