Description

This is an early 16th-century barn located near the junction of School Road and North End Road, close to the former Sewell’s Farm. The house associated with the farm was demolished around 1970. The barn is timber-framed and features black weather-boarding, with a corrugated asbestos gabled roof. A brick and flint wall forms the outshot at the south end. The barn comprises five bays, with lean-to outshots extending along the east side, the south end, and part of the west side. A central double door is present on the west side, while the doors on the east side are missing. The centre bay of the barn projects into the east outshot. The frame incorporates jowled posts, cambered tie beams with arched braces (some of which have been replaced), and crown posts with longitudinal arched braces to the collar purlin. A trenched external down-brace is visible at the north end of the east wall, with similar braces missing from the other corners. The structure includes a sole plate, middle rail, and wall plate, along with remnants of a brick plinth. Centre posts in the end walls rise to the wall-plate level, and secondary intermediate studs are present on the west wall. The gables and the remainder of the roof are modern. A brick threshing floor remains, and timber floors are present at both ends. Notable joinery details include an edge-halved and bridled scarf in the wall plate over the west doorway and an edge-halved scarf near the south end of the east wall plate. Studs and plates show grooves indicating former wattle panels.
