Description

Change House is a house primarily from the 16th century, with additions from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It features a timber frame, mostly plastered, with some areas covered in weatherboarding, and is topped with handmade red clay tiles. The building has a complex, irregular E-shaped plan, facing southwest, with three wings extending to the northeast. There is one internal chimney stack at the southwest end of the middle wing, another at the junction of the southeast wing and middle range, and external stacks at the northeast ends of the two outside wings, along with extensions beyond. A stair tower is located between the southeast wing and the middle wing, and there are additional single-storey extensions to the northeast. The house is two storeys tall.

On the southwest elevation, there is a six-panel door set in a 20th-century doorcase with two columns and an architrave, accompanied by a range of four 20th-century sash windows. The southeast internal stack has two original octagonal shafts, while the rear internal stack has two octagonal shafts from the 19th or 20th century. Inside, the building features chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops and sections of early 17th-century panelling on the ground floor. The staircase includes an octagonal newel post and flat balusters, dating around 1600. The two first-floor rooms in the western corner are particularly noteworthy, showcasing extremely wide curved braces set within heavy studding, although the floor below has been rebuilt and the room beneath has undergone significant alterations. Heavily weathered framing is visible on both sides of the middle wing, which is now enclosed by later extensions. All the roofs are of clasped purlin construction.
