Description
No 35, known as Barnardiston, is a house located on Chippinghill, dating from the 16th to 17th century. It features a front made of painted brick from the 18th century, complete with a parapet and a raised brick band. The building has two storeys and attics, with a seven-window range of double-hung sashes that have glazing bars and are set in flush cased frames. A raised brick band runs between the storeys. The central doorway is adorned with a projecting Doric porch that has fluted columns, a frieze, and a cornice. At the west end, there is a wing that extends to the rear. The roof is tiled and includes two hipped dormers on the north front. Inside, there are elements of 17th-century panelling and a beam that is carved with the initials E C and inscribed with the year 1610. The building is part of a group that includes No 18, the Smithy, Nos 20 to 30 (even), the Parish Church of St Nicholas, The Vicarage, Nos 43 to 55 (odd), and No 2 (White Horse Public House), as well as forming a group with Nos 14 (Recess) and 16 (Braystons).
